POLICY FOR USE OF GYMS FOR CYO ACTIVITIES
THE HANLON CENTER-ABVM & ST. JOSEPH PARISH CENTER

This outline is presented as a guideline.  Please use common sense when using the gyms, and when encountering a problem/issue.

  1. Eating and drinking are not permitted in the gym.  Water fountains are provided.

  2. Smoking is prohibited at all times.

  3. Parking spaces designated as "Handicapped Parking" are for disabled drivers only.  Coaches and/or parents should not park in these spots.  Please adhere to this, and inform parents if you see them parking in these spots.

  4. Each coach (or designee) is responsible to clean up the gym after use.  This may be difficult when teams are practicing back-to back.  In these instances, the last team scheduled is responsible for cleaning.  Cleaning involves sweeping the floor and dispensing of all trash.  All bathrooms should be checked before and after each practice for damage and to be certain they are clean.

  5. All lights ( bathroom, hallways and gym) should be turned off after the last practice or game.  Confirm that all outside doors leading to the gym are locked and securely fastened.

  6. If anything is broken, please report it immediately to John Haney (home# 610-866-3190) and to the respective rectory.  Coaches will not be charged for any damage if it was accidental.  A report must be filed in order to make any necessary insurance claims.  Accident reports should be made to John Haney.

  7. We are all concerned about the safety of the children.  Please observe the following suggestions:
    a.  You should only be responsible for the children on your team.  Do not allow parents to drop off non-team members or siblings of team members.  You cannot accept that responsibility.
    b.  Each gym is equipped with a fire alarm.  If the alarm goes off, immediately gather the children and exit the building.  You should then inform the rectory of the alarm.  Do not reenter the building until you have been cleared to do so, either by the fire department or someone else in authority.
    c.  Children should not leave the gym unaccompanied.  Coaches should remain with the children until they are picked up.
    d.  Ice bags are in the freezer in the gym office at The Hanlon Center.  There is an ice machine in the kitchen at St. Joseph.  Remember to bring First Aid Kits to all practices and games.

  8. Keys for both gyms will be contained in lock-boxes (similar to those used by Real Estate Agents).  Each Head Coach will be given the combination to the lock-boxes.  It is the coach's responsibility to return the key to the box at the end of each practice, game, etc.  Please do not share the combination numbers with anyone.  Remember, the gym is not to be used for personal use.

  9. No one is permitted to enter the school building through the gyms or other access areas.  The only space allowed to be occupied is the gym and adjoining restrooms. All other areas are off limits.  An alarm has been installed on doors leading to the school and from the Hanlon Center.

AFTER SCHOOL PROCEDURES- LIMEPORT

Please make every effort to observe the following recommendations:

  1. Coaches should arrive at school by dismissal time (3:10).

  2. CYO children should meet in the lunchroom with the coach.  If the lunchroom is in use, please gather in a corner of the gym, away from the bus children.

  3. Coaches should have the children change a few at a time in the upper bathrooms.  When possible, one coach should stay in the lunchroom/gym and one coach should supervise the bathrooms.

  4. After the child changes, he/she should return to the lunchroom/gym.

  5. The CYO children should not run around unsupervised.

  6. Do not leave door propped open when coaches leave the school.

AFTER SCHOOL PROCEDURES- COLESVILLE

  1. Coaches should arrive at school by dismissal time (3:10).

  2. Coach should inspect The Hanlon Center restrooms for damage.

  3. CYO children should meet in The Hanlon Center.

  4. Coaches should have the children change a few at a time in the Hanlon Center restrooms.

  5. After the child changes, he/she should return to the gym.

  6. Children should not have access to the Hanlon Center office/store room.  All equipment should be provided by the coach.

  7. The CYO children should not re-enter the school or leave the gym unsupervised.

  8. Coaches should inspect the Hanlon Center restrooms following practice.

BASKETBALL POLICY

St. Michael CYO, with the support of the Basketball Director and Assistant Directors resolve that the following procedures be implemented when tryouts for JV and Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams are necessary.  It is expected that all coaches will abide by this policy.

By instituting this policy, St. Michael CYO intends that the manner in which selection and notification to "A" and "B" teams for basketball will be clear and applicable from year to year as coaches and players circulate through the organization.  The players and their parents will be assured of a more accountable criteria thereby assuring that each individual is given an equal opportunity to demonstrate his or her abilities at tryouts.

  1. Tryouts shall consist of skill-based drills, thereby allowing each player ample repetitions to demonstrate his or her abilities in a given area, (i.e. shooting, dribbling, rebounding, etc.)  The coach or coaches conducting the tryout may select drills used.  The use of scrimmages and/or games as the primary criteria of eligibility is NOT permitted.  Games/scrimmages may be used in conjunction with drills, provided that each player is given equal time during the scrimmage or game period.

It is the intent of the CYO Board that a tryout should be comprised primarily of drills, (many of which DO mimic game situations) that afford each player equal repetitions.

  1. Notification of players selected for the "A" team and those selected for the "B" roster will be done by telephone no sooner than the day after the last scheduled tryout for that team.  Under no circumstances should "A" team rosters be announced at the conclusion of the tryout session.  It is expected that the coaches conducting the tryouts will confer after the session to determine their final "A" roster.  Players are to be notified by telephone by a coach.  The “A” team coach and assistants, or the “A and B” team coaches and assistants may share this responsibility, provided a “B” staff is in place at the time of tryouts.  Final accountability rests with the "A" coach.

Equally important, notifying the players individually by telephone, a day or so after the final tryout gives the children an opportunity to accept their roster placement away from their peers and within a supportive environment.
